Eugene Frederick Langer (Gene) was born in El Paso, Wisconsin on March 15, 1931. He was raised on the Langer family farm in Ellsworth, WI until he was 17 years old.

He joined the Air Force and served in Washington at the Pentagon and at Patric Air Force Base in Florida during the Korean war and was honorably discharged after 3 years of service.

Gene met Jo Anne Grantham on a blind date at the Central Florida Fair. They were wed on April 18, 1953 and had 3 children: Fred, Pam, and Eric. He loved his family and was loved by many friends.

Gene was a devout Catholic and a member of St. Margaret Mary in Winter Park since 1964. In 1982 at the Billy Graham Crusade in Orlando, he accepted God's gift of salvation and the assurance of eternal life.

Gene has suffered from a combination of Alzheimer's and Frontotemporal Lobe Dementia for the last couple of years. His wife, Jo Anne died eight months ago and even in his challenged mental state we believe he missed her to the point of decline and began shutting down the last two weeks to join her.

We miss Dad / Grampa so much, yet rejoice in the fact that he no longer suffers and is with his Lord.

The song playing is Stardust (Glenn Miller Orchestra). This was one of Gene's favorite songs - he sang and whistled it around the house frequently when we (the kids) were young. . You can stop the music by pressing the Pause/Stop button on the control bar immediately above.

The poem below by an unknown author was a favorite of Gene's. He handed it to his best friend, Jon, at his wife's funeral in 2007. Poetically, it applies to Gene and Jo Anne as she did precede him by eight months.

Should You Go First

Should you go first and I remain
to walk the road alone,
I'll live in memories garden dear,
with happy days we've known.

In spring I'll wait for roses red,
when faded, the lilacs blue.
In early fall when brown leaves fall,
I'll catch a glimpse of you.

Should you go first and I remain,
for battle to be fought.
Each thing you've touched along the way
will be a hallowed spot.

I'll hear your voice, I'll see your smile,
though blindly I may grope,
The memory of your helping hand
will buoy me on with hope.

Should you go first and I remain,
one thing I’ll have you do:
Walk slowly down that long, long path,
for soon I’ll follow you.

I want to know each step you take,
so I may take the same.
For someday down that lonely road
You’ll hear me call your name.

50th wedding anniversary - April 2003

Barbara (Fred's wife) sang this song to Dad just a few days before he died. He opened his eyes and puckered to kiss her and let her kiss him.

The Carol Burnett show was a family favorite for many years.

I'm So Glad We Had This Time Together
Carol Burnett’s Theme Song

I'm so glad we had this time together,
Just to have a laugh, or sing a song.
Seems we just get started and before you know it
Comes the time we have to say, "So long".

There's a time you put aside for dreamin’
And a time for things you have to do.
The time I love the best is any evening
I can spend a moment here with you.

When the time comes and I'm feelin' lonely
And I'm feelin' oh so blue.
I just sit back and think of you only
And the happiness still comes through.

That's why I'm glad we had this time together.
Cause it makes me feel like I belong.
Seems we just get started and before you know it
Comes the time we have to say, "So Long".
